I want to "recreate" a model from a book and cite the author/source. Is this allowed under U.S. Copyright???

You absolutely need to cite the source in your dissertation in whatever citation style applicable to your discipline. In my opinion, it would be best to use the model in its original form. If you were to “recreate” the model it must be EXACT. Any changes whatsoever would be considered a “derivative” and that right belongs solely to the author – you would need his/her express permission to recreate and publish it,
